THE alarming extent of gunshot wounds inflicted on Cape baboons has been revealed in a new report, which suggests the use of paintball rifles may be a more humane way to manage the animals.
All Peninsula baboons X-rayed during autopsies in recent years had “exceptionally high” levels of foreign metal in them: buckshot, birdshot, BB pellets and .22 bullets, according to the report prepared by UCT’s Baboon Research Unit.
The last three male baboons X-rayed by wildlife vet Dr Hamish Currie each had more than 70 foreign objects in their bodies.
However, research into the use of paintball guns suggests these non-lethal weapons, which do not use metal projectiles, may be an “extremely successful” deterrent.
The use of paintball guns is illegal without a permit from CapeNature, but many Peninsula residents are using them against baboon.
